After a tree has been dismantled, the property owner has to decide what they wish to do with the remaining tree stump and root system. While there are a number of different methods that relate to tree stump removal, by far the most common way is to arbor the remaining root system with a Stump Grinding Machine.
What is a Stump Grinding Machine & How Does it Work?
A stump grinder, also known as a stump cutter, is a powerful machine designed to remove tree stumps by grinding them into small wood chips. It employs a rotating cutting disc equipped with sharp, durable teeth—often made of tungsten carbide—to chip away at the wood. The cutting wheel’s movements are typically controlled by hydraulic cylinders, allowing it to move laterally and vertically to grind through the stump .
Stump grinders come in various models and versions, covering a power range from 70 to 300 horsepower. Some are standalone machines, while others are attachments for tractors, excavators, bob cats, and other construction equipment. Vertical stump grinders are commonly used in forests and for the maintenance of green areas; they can destroy an entire root of 50 cm (20 in) in diameter to more than one meter deep in 30 seconds .
Stump grinding is typically performed by professional arborists or landscapers, but stump grinders can also be rented for personal use. Proper operation is crucial to ensure both efficiency and safety, and professionals often coordinate with utility companies to identify and mark underground utilities that may be affected during the grinding process
Why stump grinding over other stump removal techniques?
Most people would be surprised to know just how large the underground root system of the tree they just removed actually is. The sheer size of most root systems means that an usually large hole would have to be created to extract it and large expensive machinery such as excavators and cranes would be required.
By todays standards, stump grinding offers significant speed and cost advantages over complete stump removal, as well as improved access for the machine and reduced disturbance to surrounding vegetation and landscaping.
Even healthy-looking trees can pose a problem. The roots of a tree can spread far beyond its branches, which can cause underground problems that may affect your foundation, driveways, and underground pipes. Root systems that stretch beneath buildings or infrastructure can lead to cracks and other significant problems that may be costly to repair. Removing trees early will prevent these and keep your landscaping in one piece.
Benefits of Stump Grinding
the below list shows a quick overview of why most customers choose stump grinding as their preferred option for stump removal...

- Fastest Method: The stump start disappearing as soon as it contacts the arbor wheel. Typical time can be from 1-4 hours for most size stump removals.
- Access Friendly: The bigger the machine the faster the removal, but bigger machines have less access. Most stumps can be accessed quickly with a small stump grinding machine, where bigger excavators would not be able to go.
- Cheapest Method: Fast turnaround times and a relatively small machine makes stump grinding many times more cost efficient than using other techniques
- Removes Trip Hazard: Tree roots and stumps above ground level leave trip hazards. The stump grinder gets the roots below the surface and the remaining holes a filled with the left over woodchip / sawdust created by the machine
- Small Footprint: Relatively small stump grinding machines cause little disturbance to the surrounding landscape vs
